Events during 2011

In 2011 Christians are celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the King James Bible, the Authorised Version. Ponteland's Summer Festival - see separate tab - will be marking this anniversary. Earlier this year, Peter the Vicar, gave an illustrated talk on the subject - which you can find under "Worship - King James Bible anniversary"

Final Service and Drinks for The Chandler Family

At the Nativity Play on Sunday 18 December a lovely group of children re-enacted the Christmas Story, and the whole congregation of a couple of hundred people sang along to "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas". Afterwards everyone went to the Hall for a drink and mince pie. £150 was raised by the Penguins who had made calendars, labels, sweets and other Christmas goodies. They were sold in aid of work in the Philippines - where our link missionaries, Eric and Sandra, are working.

At the Christmas Eve 4pm and 5pm services, children from the congregation depicted the nativity scene with figures of the characters.

Summer Festival 2011

Our biennial Summer Festival took place from Saturday 30th July to Saturday 6th August 2011, and we welcomed many hundreds of visitors. Money was raised for three charities – Church Army (www.churcharmy.org.uk), Newcastle Children’s Hospital Charity (www.newcastle-childrens-hospital-charity.org.uk), and our Organ Cleaning Fund. The Festival raised £3,682 for each of the three charities (a marvellous total, for which many thanks).

St Mary's was full of marvellous flowers - displays based on the words of the King James Bible. You can see these photosin the section below. We also enjoyed a special Festival Eucharist on the morning of Sunday 31st July - our preacher was Dr Deb Rooke from Oxford University, and we are very grateful to her. In the evening a Songs of Praise (with 94 in the congregation!) traced the history of bible translation - and Deb read to us from the scriptures in Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Latin, Tyndale's version, the Great Bible, Coverdale's Psalms, and the King James version itself. +Frank, the Assistant Bishop of Newcastle came for our Wednesday morning Eucharist - it was good to welcome him to his first service at St Mary's. There were also three concerts - photos in the "Summer Festival Events" section below - an evening of railway films and an author event organised in conjunction with Ponteland Library.

In the Church Hall Northumbrian Artists of today exhibited their work. The hall was full of display boards and a wide variety of paintings. Outside the Hall refreshments were available - ploughman's lunches and cream teas were very popular. If anyone has any photographs of this exhibition or the refreshments, we would be very grateful for some to go on the website.

In the Vicarage Garden we started with Circus Skills - a great morning with lots of children - and then the marquee was filled with displays about the King James Bible. Our thanks to Ponteland Local History Society for their hard work. Two of our congregation bought their 1613 copy of the Bible in one afternoon. Photographs are in the "Summer Festival Events" section below.

The Festival was organised by June Reed, June Colvin, Julie Bell and Janet Cooper - pictured below with Peter Cowey, the Mayor of Ponteland. We are very grateful to them, and to everyone who worked so hard. It was a good week.
